Helping children to be healthy

This service helps children to improve their emotional health and well-being, gain confidence and self-esteem. It offers help to families who are in need of support such as families from refugee communities, highly deprived neighbourhoods, non-English speakers, single parents and low-income families. Our services provide one-to-one support, parenting programmes and mentoring programmes in schools. The projects encourage children to lead healthy lifestyles and develop their mental and physical capabilities.

High Trees Community Development Trust

 
Emotional and practical support to children

High Trees works with young people who are particularly vulnerable and in need of support. The project offers advice, support, guidance and advocacy to children and families to reduce disadvantage and minimise risks, which could affect the child’s mental, emotional or physical health.

Support to vulnerable families

This project provides a range of support to families with children aged 5-13 years old. This will particularly be focussed on mobile children and families, offering help in accessing education and giving basic welfare advice and support as well as helping with referrals. It will also work closely with other projects and help in assisting isolated children to participate in wider activities.

Mentoring support

The project also runs a peer mentoring programme in schools to help children manage their behaviour and deal with conflicts in a positive way.

Other services:

A range of other services for young people including a bike maintenance project, a homework club and a computer club, adult learning courses in IT, ESOL, literacy and numeracy, advice and guidance, employment support, and IT training for older people.

Referrals:

High Trees will take referrals form other organisations. The project is currently piloting the use of the Youth Inclusion Support Panel referral form.

Blackfriars Settlement

Blackfriars Settlement runs a healthy living project offering advice on healthy eating and lifestyles, food hygiene and nutrition. The programme includes fact-finding sessions for young people on growth i.e. physical and emotional changes, nutrition, smoking, alcohol and substance misuse. Girls’ only sessions for those attending secondary school (with special emphasis on involving Asian girls) will cover topics such as body image – self-esteem, the media, feeling beautiful and stress, eating right and body weight.

Other services:

Youth clubs, an Adventure Playground, play schemes, a parent and toddler groups, education and training courses such as IT, basic skills, ESOL, vocational skills workshops and mental health awareness training, day clubs and befriending outreach for older people and community safety projects.

Bud Umbrella

Bud Umbrella offers complementary therapy sessions to encourage and improve development, inclusion and psychological health to children with behavioural or emotional difficulties. The organisation provides one–to-one reflexology sessions in schools to reduce stress and anxiety amongst children, increase their confidence, concentration and alertness and make them more considerate towards others.

Referrals for children based within Fenstanton and Sunnyhill via  Children's Fund only. Bud Umbrella can work in other schools and with other organisations but resources will need to be discussed.

Fegans Child and Family Care

Fegans Child and Family Care provides one-to-one support for individual families. This could be practical help, such as taking children to school during a crisis period, assistance with filling in forms, signposting and supporting families in accessing additional services, emotional support to parents, advice and support on parenting issues.

In schools, the project offers a drop in "Talk Time" service for children, on a one-to-one basis or in small groups to provide an opportunity to talk to an appropriately trained adult about problems they are experiencing such as bereavement, family breakdown, bullying, anger, sibling rivalry, behaviour, and relationship or friendship difficulties.

Parenting courses, parenting support in schools, a parent and toddler group, counselling for adults and children and holiday activities.

Referrals:

Referrals can be made by phone, self-referrals are accepted.

Lambeth Playcare Trust

Lambeth Playcare Trust provides play and leisure activities for children and young people with an aim to promote their physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Services include after schools and holiday activities; a football club, cookery workshops, arts and crafts activities, a homework club, swimming, ice skating, cricket, basketball, outings and trips.

Latin School of Culture Arts and Languages (LASCAL)

Also funded under Enjoying and Achieving theme

Latin School of Culture Arts and Languages (LASCAL) aims to encourage social inclusion amongst the local Latin American community, often of asylum seeker or refugee status, through educational, cultural and social learning opportunities. LAS offers classes in the mother tongue, music, dance, arts and crafts and family football. Out of school educational and cultural activities allow young people to share their cultural heritage with members of other communities, which helps them to build their confidence and self-esteem.

Portuguese classes, business English and IT, ESOL, Capoeira, dance, art and design courses.

Latin School of Culture Arts and Languages (LASCAL) is based at Sunnyhill School in Streatham.

Springfield Community Flat

Also funded under Enjoying and Achieving theme.

Springfield Community Flat is a grass roots organisation providing a broad range of support to hard to reach local communities. It acts as a family centre for vulnerable families, providing casework and counselling, assistance with placing a child in school, breakfast clubs, playschemes and after school clubs. All activities are designed to provide plenty of sport activities and encourage healthy life styles. All round support is given to reduce isolation, exclusion and improve relationship between family members.

Other services:

ESOL classes with crèche attached, parent, carer and toddler groups at Springfield and Christchurch estates, parenting skills workshops, adventure playground, Youth clubs, depression support group, help for refugees and asylum seekers and senior citizen group.

The service takes referrals from agencies and self-referrals from the individual families.

WelCare-in-Lambeth

WelCare-in-Lambeth provides children's groups for children between the ages of 5-7yrs and 8-10 years old, during the school half-term holiday. Indoors and outdoors activities are designed to enable children to enjoy play to increase their self esteem, confidence and social skills. Individual play therapy provides opportunity for children who are hurting to explore painful experiences in safe and friendly environment, through art and other activities.

Individual social work, parenting groups, postnatal depression and Black Women’s support group, drop-off crèche for pre-school age children, summer playscheme and generation link, for those without a grandparent link.

Young Carers

The Young Carers Project (YCP) offers numerous pro-active, needs-led services, which support young carers, who are caring for a member of their family with a disability or long-term illness. With support from LCF, the project runs homework clubs (twice a week) and a monthly youth club working in partnership with local youth centres in the Clapham, Vassal and Streatham areas.

Other services:

Programme of social meetings, day trips, homework support, schools clubs, indoor and outdoor activities and short residentials, advice, information and advocacy services. The project works in partnership with many organisations including social services, local youth centres, local schools and The Children’s Fund.

Families can contact the project directly to self refer, and referrals are taken from other agencies.

Working With Men (WMM)

The project helps children and young people to understand relationships and what they involve i.e. building friendship, adult relationships, mental and sexual health issues, fatherhood, including teenage fathers. The project sessions are designed to increase self-esteem and confidence of young people and help them to articulate issues relating to Sex and Relationship Education. The activities are based on active learning and drama. The project provides focus activity groups for vulnerable young people and training for school staff. Working with Men project has strong links with the Healthy Schools Programme and Lambeth Teenage Pregnancy and Parenthood Team.

A wide-ranging support and awareness raising around issues related to the development of men and boys.
