Peer Mediation
Peer Mediation
Peer mediation is a innovative service that helps to reduce conflict in schools and equips pupils with skills in listening, communication, negotiation, empathy and creative problem solving. The mediators use this skills to support other children in their school who may be experiencing conflicts, to resolve their dispute in a peaceful way and without relying on adults.
5 Steps of peer mediation
STEP ONE
The mediator’s promises
• We will not take sides
• We will not tell you what to do
• We will not gossip
The mediator’s rules

• Speak one at a time
• Speak with respect
• Don’t blame the other person
STEP TWO
Ask disputants what the PROBLEM is and REPEAT it. Ask them how they FEEL about it and REPEAT what you have heard each one say.
STEP THREE
Ask each one if he or she can ACKNOWLEDGE the other person’s FEELINGS
STEP FOUR
Ask them to offer SUGGESTIONS about how they can sort things out. REPEAT it.
STEP FIVE
Ask them to agree a SOLUTION
Ask them what will they do differently to make sure that they don’t find themselves in this same situation again in the future!
